I wanted to get a photo or two of the surface hoar before it disappears so...
One of the better spots to find the hoars
is parking areas near Porter Fork in Millcreek canyon.
Also interested in snow conditions.
Grey sky and grey valley.
Elevations, slope angles and aspects
6400-9500', angles over 35°, north and west facing aspects.
Snow conditions
Lower elevations have a shallow, but still supportable two feet or so of snow.
Off aspects and south facing are crusted, mostly breakable.
North facing, sheltered and shady, retains settled, recrystallized old powder.
Weather
Overcast sky, moderate temperatures and light wind.
Evaluation
Good stability with surface sluffing the observed instability.
Surface hoar was present at the traihead with widespread near surface faceting at all elevations.
Would expect an avalanche cycle if and when it snows again.
