Alta guard station to Black Knob
to Superior
and back to the guard station.
Elevations, slope angles and aspects
8300-1100', angles over 35°, all aspects.
Snow conditions
The upper 6-10" of snow was soggy from several days of rain
Radiation cooling provided a shallow refreeze which was short lived. One run of corn then slush.
Done by 1pm.
Weather
Cool in the early morning with clear skies. Rapid warming with convective clouds forming before noon. No wind.
Avalanche activity
Widespread point release and rollers, mostly but not limited, to east facing and rocky areas.
Evaluation
Decreasing stability from a lack of refreeze and warm temperatures.
Layering on the shady side lingers with some potential for deeper release into old snow.
