April 3

kessler-pano

Spruces, Reynolds, Butler Basin, Wilson chutes, Alexander Basin, Gobblers Knob, Porter Fork

Elevations, slope angles and aspects

6100-10400', angles over 35°, all aspects.

Snow conditions

I found 4-12" settled storm total.

The snow was of medium density providing a good cushion from the old surface.

wilson-chute

Off aspects and south facing did receive a bit of warming during the day but, no wet activity was observed.

North facing stayed dry at upper elevations, mid and lower elevation Porter exit in the afternoon, was a little crunchy.

Weather

Partly to mostly cloudy skies with a flurry or two. Winds were light, temperatures stayed cool.

Avalanche activity

A few shallow soft slabs and sluffs were observed in steep terrain, mostly east facing.

Southeast facing Wilson(Butler Basin) and east facing chute in Alexander both had actual debris piles, running a few hundred feet.

The other observed slides didn't run far or produce debris.

Evaluation

Good stability in the area traveled.

Ski cuts suggested in starting zones and break overs.

I'd expect some wet activity with significant warming, however, good storm settlement should minimize activity.
