December 28
Gobblers Knob
Elevations, slope angles and aspects
6100-10k, angles over 35°, north and west facing aspects.
Snow conditions
2-4" new snow
over 10" or so settled recent snow.
The new snow was slightly denser than the last storm blower because of wind effect.
Wind rows along the ridge and down on the upper slope were building to a foot + deep.
Ski cutting produced some cracking with movement lacking.
The northwest face of Gobblers(at least the portion traveled through) has a stout rain-rime crust? under the recent snow.
It extends from the trailhead to the ridge providing good support on both the up and down.
Weather
Snow, heavy at times with a coupla inches accumulation during the day.
Cool temperatures with a pesky wind, 10-20 mph, from the north at upper elevations.
Snow pit
Evaluation
Mostly stable snow. Wind was drifting and scouring upper elevations so...
would expect some active slabs on lee aspects with crossloading possible.
Potential for older layering activation with significant loading, although the stout crust will limit, where present.
