March 16
Gobblers Knob.
Why do you go to Millcreek so often?
Twenty minutes to the trailhead, interesting snow conditions, great views of BCC and I'm too poor to ride the bus or buy gas for longer drives.
Elevations, slope angles and aspects
6100-10200', angles over 35°, north and west facing aspects.
Snow conditions
Soggy to about 7500' on the up. Marginal refreeze above to the summit.
Snow was supportable, although it became less so below 8k on the descent around 2 pm.
Patches of corn, patches of snocone, otherwise, smush.
Weather
High clouds, light wind and mild temperatures.
Avalanche activity
Three small glides in Broads.
Zoomed.
Several large point release sluffs on southeast facing Raymond.
Sluffs on Raymond slabs(no glide).
Numerous long running sluffs in upper east facing Mineral Fork.
Northeast facing Silver Bell is toast without a significant storm.
On the other hand...
despite total snow of three feet or less, main face suffered only a few rollers, so far.
Evaluation
Stability decreases with day time heating from marginal freeze.
Weather guessers suggest a day or so of cooling mid week which would allow some skiing on what's left.
