December 27
Porter Fork-Gobblers Knob
Elevations, slope angles and aspects
6200-10200', angles over 35°, north and west facing aspects.
Snow conditions
6" new snow since the 24th. right side up and well bonded.
Wind from several directions had scuffed up, scoured and drifted recent snow at both upper and mid elevations.
Upper elevation was a bit inverted, mid, soft and creamy.
Weather
Clear skies, light wind and cool temperatures.
Avalanche activity
Large avalanche on Gobblers from the 22-23rd natural cycle.
Slide encompassed Davis Gulch(looker's left) to the Dead Snag(middle right) descending into the main gully.
It was covered by 6-8" of recent snow.
Extensive activity in Broads, both near the ridges and mid slope.
The largest observed was Bonkers,
which left a good sized debris pile in the flats.
Of interest...
Only scattered pockets
released during the cycle in Silver Bell and West Porter.
Evaluation
Mostly stable snow in the area.
Would suspect a few outliers otherwise, good stability with a stout bridge over weak layers near the ground.
Steep terrain with shallow coverage from the November north wind would be most suspect both near ridges and at mid slope break overs.
