Best to get out for a look around even if...
Starting at Spruces campground, I hiked the summer trail with Verts snowshoes on my pack to the meadow below
West Desolation ridge where there was enough snow to switch modes.
6" of snow increased to about a foot, a little more here and there. At first I could feel the layers in the snow, firm crust as a base,
dense mid pack with lighter density snow capping. As I ascended, the mid pack layer got weaker and I eventually was penetrating to the
ground with every step, slip sliding on the crust.

There are a coupla little storms in the forecast but, nothing suggested providing widespread ski-ability.
