January 16
White Pine-Red Baldy
Elevations, slope angles and aspects
7500-11000', angles over 35°, north facing aspects.
Snow conditions
Some lingering evidence of yesterday's "storm". Otherwise, I'd think wind fucked sums it up.
(Scoured, drifted, windboard, boilerplate, buffed and sastrugi.)
Avalanche activity
New snow sluffs and slides in upper Tanners, yesterday.
Triggered a shallow hard slab, ski cutting on the White Pine retreat.
Elevation was around 9k. Aspect, north facing. Slide was about 25' wide, 1-6" deep. Descended 50-60 vertical feet.
Wind drift resting on firm wind compacted surface. Facets? Hell, I dunno.
Shoulda dug a pit. It's trendy. Forgot my string, though.
Weather
Overcast skies, moderate temperatures. Wind from the west, gusting to around 30 mph on the ridges. Obviously was moving some snow.
Evaluation
Where have I heard this?
"Instability would be from recent wind drifting"
