January 22
Willow-Beartrap
Elevations, slope angles and aspects
7500-10200, angles approaching 35°, all aspects.
Snow conditions
8 or so inches of new snow with a settled total of about 2 feet.
Density changes within storm snow running rampant. Foot penetration 2+', ski penetration 6".
Continued wind from every imaginable direction have produced a patchwork quilt of drifting and scouring.
Most common wind loaded aspect would have an easterly component.
Avalanche activity
One small natural was observed on a northeast facing sub ridge on the approach to West Monitor. Cornice fall.
Of interest, no natural activity was observed in Dutches or West Monitor.
"Hey, I wuz just walking the ridge minding my own business when..."
Large full depth avalanche was remotely triggered from the ridge above West Willow by the second on a traverse.
Estimated size: 200' wide, 3 to maybe 5' deep, descending about 500 vertical feet,
leaving an impressive debris pile.
Aspect was ene facing. Elevation at about 9k. Slide was mixed hard and soft slab with, density kit(my hand) measuring of 15-30 percent.
The slide initiated at the old snow surface, quickly stepping down, leaving 6-8" of well defined facets.
Collapse failure on facet.
Looking down at the left flank, stress fracturing visible and plenty of hang fire lingering.
Weather
Snow, heavy at times, little noticeable accumulation. Moderate temperatures. Wind from the west,
gusting over 30 mph.
Evaluation
She's more than a little loose today, would be an understatement.
Mother Nature is now in charge and will do whatever the hell she wants.
Hoping for the big one so's skiing will again be possible(it isn't at present).
