January 28
Spruces-Reynolds peak-Butler fork-Wilson fork-Wilson glade-Gobbler's cabin run-Pole canyon
Elevations, slope angles and aspects
6200-10400, angles over 40°, all aspects.
Snow conditions
2-4" recent snow over variable base. Overnight wind from the east did some damage, scouring and drifting.
Day time heating made sun exposed sticky and those aspects are likely crusted.
Avalanche activity
Recent activity was observed in Butler Basin ene on Gobblers, shallow new snow slides
and Holy Toledo in Cardiff.
Probably the result of the east wind.
Broads
Itching to get into Broads?
Wilson fork
Had a look at the slide in Wilson fork
Impressive crown in places.
Reported width of quarter to a third of a mile was greatly exaggerated.
More like 4-600' wide.
Seems odd that a person would spend two days on the ridge trying to start a slide, eventually succeeding.
Whatever turns your crank.
Wilson glade
Looking up
Reportedly triggered on the up track after two laps.
Depends woulda been handy.
All of Wilson fork avalanched during the December cycle. Skied the area on my birthday, January 17th.
Incredibly weak, shallow snow.
Three dudes
Oldie but a goodie. Naming occured in the eighties, when three dudes were caught, two carried.
Still pulls loose from time to time.
Weather
Beautiful day!
Evaluation
Healing in session.
There is good skiing with careful route selection.
Picking the wrong slope'll kill ya.
Bull in the china shop isn't the answer.
