January 8
Pole Canyon-Gobblers Knob-Porter Fork
Elevations, slope angles and aspects
6200-10400', angles over 35°, north facing aspects
Snow conditions
The few inches of high density snow from the last storm has settled and is now capped with surface hoar at lower elevations.
Up high, winds from the wnw have drifted lee aspects, scouring windward.
Soft, settled snow can be found as can a wide variety of wind effected .
Avalanche activity
There were at least three recent slides in upper Alexander Basin.
They were all the result of cornice falls on steep east facing aspects, repeating on paths which have previously slid, probably during Wednesday's wind storm.
A new snow slide was observed on the north east facing shoulder of Raymond.
Step downs into older layering as the slide descended, can be seen in the zoomed photo.
Weather
Clear skies, temperatures were cool in the morning, warming as the day progressed. Wind was non existent.
Evaluation
Most stable snow was found in the area.
Instability would be from (the broken record) wind drifting on the wide variety of old snow layering.
