April 17
White Pine
Elevations, slope angles and aspects
7800-11k, angles over 35°, north, east and west facing aspects.
Snow conditions
Refreeze was marginal.
Snow at lower elevations was spongy and supportable in the morning.
Surface crust gradually thickened with elevation gain, becoming firm above about 10k(still edge able).
Northwest facing stayed cool into the afternoon, ene warmed enough to initiate wet activity by noon,
limited to rollers.
Weather
Overcast to foggy skies. Upper elevation cloud deck kept the peaks obscured with only occasional views.
Spits and sputters of rain below 9k, snow flurries above, little accumulation.
Wind from the west, gusting over 20 mph at upper elevations.
Evaluation
Stable in the am, increasing instability with daytime heating.
Weather guess is for rain below 9k, snow above.
Stability would be dependent on bonding of new snow to old surface above the rain-snow line.
Wet activity is likely to increase below snow line.
