Gobblers Knob

Elevations, slope angles and aspects

6200-10400', angles over 35°, north facing aspects.

Snow conditions

There was a skiff to an inch of new snow at lower elevations increasing to about 4" new over a mostly spongy base.

Off aspects and south facing have a variable crust under the new.

Some off aspects and south facing may have seen enough sun to be crusted. Clouds limited the day time heating in all areas.

Instability observed was from surface sluffing which was was also variable, dependent on aspect.

bell-slabs

Widespread in some locations, minimall in others.

Surface hoar was observed,

summit-hoar

scattered in distribution. None on the approach and on the Cabin run, widespread on the summit, continuing into Porter.

Weather

Partly cloudy to foggy because of the passing convective cloud cover into the afternoon. Winds were light from the northwest along the ridges, temperatures moderate.

Evaluation

Stable snow in the area traveled.

Future instability would be from new snow, dependent on amount and bonding, wind drifting and or daytime heating.
