November 29

Alta guard, Cardiff, Reynolds Flat.

Elevations, slope angles and aspects

7400-10500', angles over 35°, all aspects.

Snow conditions

South facing and off aspects had some crusting, variable in distribution, dependent on sun exposure.

Shady aspects were also variable with wind crusting, thick and thin.

In between there was some soft, settled and skiable snow.

Recrystallized surface-near-surface snow was found on all aspects at all elevations.

Weather

Clear to partly cloudy skies, light wind and mild temperatures.

Snow pit

cardiac-ridge-snow-profile

Layering was consistent in upper Cardiff on north and northeast facing.

West and northwest facing had shallow cover from the repeated wind events.

Observed recent avalanche activity was limited to a crown near the top of Cardiac ridge

ridge-crown

which was less than a foot deep, 20-30' wide, running a hundred feet or so.

Evaluation

A determined person would probably be able to find active instability if they tried had enough.

Weather guessers have a storm? incoming so, with the weakest snow at or near the surface, future stability will be dependent on new snow amount, wind and bonding.
